This is the kind of project Netflix needs in order to compete in the realm of children’s programming, especially when the company’s model is to dump entire seasons on viewers at once. Surely, in the company’s mind, adults who grew up on the series will be signing up to check out the reboot with the new crop of younger fans that will be discovering it for the first time. This desire to have a children’s program break out into adult awareness is where The Magic School Bus comes into play. Adventure Time isn’t a massive success because 7-10 year olds are watching and loving it, it’s because adult fans have hopped on the band-wagon and begun dissecting every episode on an analytical level. What made Batman: The Animated Series a hit was more than just the children that watched it, it was the adult fans of the Gotham crime fighter that pushed the series into pop-culture relevancy. Nickelodeon has succeeded on so many levels with the Avatar franchise because adults have grown to love the series as much as the younger audience. But, yesterday, the streaming company staked what might just be the most important claim in the business of children’s television, and if it succeeds, it could open the door for Netflix to gain the one thing it hasn’t had in the genre: shows that cross the age barrier. From a business perspective, it makes sense because the desire by internet savvy children to watch the various series will most certainly entice parents to sign up for the digital service, and it will also open a market-base for the likes of day care services who can use the programming as entertainment for children in their care.
